It was one of the most disastrous phenomenon to ever happened in Greece, heck, it is disastrous if it happened in any country. It was all over the news for weeks because it didn’t only happen in a day, it was a series of massive forest fires that broke in different parts of the country. More than 670, 000 acres of farmland, homes and protected forests were burned over the summer according to the European Forest Fire Information System.

Western and southern Peloponnese as well as southern Euboea are the places that was mainly affected. The death counts on the month of August alone reached up to 67 deaths, many buildings and houses destroyed in the aftermath of the fire. Officials ruled that the reason for the disastrous forest fires was the extreme hot and dry weather conditions combined with strong winds. Others say it was arson. Whatever the reasons are, it sure did left many people homeless and took away precious lives.

While I was watching the news last night, I saw this intriguing stuff about some scientists who grew 2 types of genetically-modified plants that are said to remove toxic compounds from our environment. Wow. that is some experiment. One of the group developed a small plant that is related to cabbage and mustard that can actually clean up the soil contaminated with cyclonite, a substance being used in explosives that is said to be highly toxic and carcinogenic!

The other group modified a poplar tree to soak somecancer-causing compunds from soil, water and air. I never even knew it can be done. Well, at least now I know that it was done and is really helping big time in helping our environment. as of now they are still testing if it will be really effective if used but i do hope that it somehow works because God knows we need more things like this at the rate people are polluting our environment.

With all the talks about global warming recently, I wonder if many people are even aware of it or have any idea what’s it about. Well, if everybody’s view abut it is the same as an 8 years old’s understanding (melting of the ice in the north pole, Santa’s home specifically), then I think we’re gonna have a big problem. But what is global warming in the first place? According to experts (wikipedia expert), it is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans since the mid-twentieth century. Mostly, greenhouse gases are responsible for this, a process by which absorption and emission of infrared radiation by atmospheric gases warm a planet’s lower atmosphere and surface.

In response to this phenomenon, environmental organizations, governments and other concerned people have implemented ways to mitigate the causes and effects of global warming. In most ways, this includes a change in people’s lifestyle and consumption such as the simple act of turning off and unplugging appliances when not in use. Climate experts have concluded that global warming is almost certainly human caused, so I guess, it is up to us if we want to save this world or not.

As I was dusting away the hardened soil of my hiking boots, I was suddenly filled with memories on how I got this ever reliable pair. I knew that I can never rely on anyone to buy me a decent hiking shoes no matter how much I’ve been hinting over the years of being given a hiking a shoes to replace the sandals (and the borrowing too). Yes, I have been borrowing shoes whenever the climb would need a hiking shoes and definitely no sandals are allowed.

Like a proper backpack, I’ve been saving for some time now for a proper shoes and when I saw it on a mall one night as my friend and I are lazily making the rounds, I knew I have to buy myself or else I would never forgive myself for taking advantage of the discount. A discounted shoes. I have a problem with money since I pay a lot of stuff and not all my money go straight to my whims (mostly to traveling). It was so funny because I don’t have much money left in my card so my friend decided to put it in her card first, then I will pay her on our payday. Worked just fine. Now it’s here on my hand, getting an ultimate cleaning.

I will write this only because I felt such a great loss when I lost my first Nalgene water bottle. Yes, I am that sentimental. Every campers in our block (or in our country) that when it comes to water bottles, Nalgene is the most trusted. The bright-colored, 1-litre wide-mouth, polycarbonated bottle are shatter-proof and said to be indestructible. it doesn’t break easily in sub-freezing conditions, it is even microwaveable! The materials used in Nalgene resist stains or absorbing odors. If you put a boiling water in it, it will not break or anything.

Imagine my dismay and sadness upon learning I left it in the bus. It was as if I lost an important document or a pet has just died on me. I swear it was a heartbreaking moment for me because that Nalgene has been with me for years now. Whenever I go hiking and climbing minor or major mountains, it is there clipped on my backpack, always to be trusted never to break. It may have its share of scratches but it it only proves that it has been to places and used well. It will be surely missed.

Well, somebody already mentioned that backpacks are crucial for successful hiking adventures. And I couldn’t agree more. Every outdoor enthusiast knows this, everyone who ever dreams of conquering the mountains, no matter how high or low is it, will depend and need a great backpack. But with so many choices of backpacks sold in stores these days, how will you know which is the best? Backpacks range from expensive to cheap, lightweight to ultra lightweight, fashionable to basic.

For me, the first thing I consider when buying a backpack is if it sits comfortably on my shoulders. A lot of bag that i’ve tried are really uncomfortable once used but there are some brands from Deuter and The North Face that are so soft in the shoulders and protect the back pretty well. It is quite an important factor because you’ll be lugging the weight whether on short or long trips alike. Choose a certain size that fits you or a size that has the correct frame as you as lugging backpacks that are bigger (or heavier) than you is absolutely a waste of time, money and effort. remember that backpacks will contain all of your important belongings in the wilderness so make sure to make the right choice.

As with compliance to our religious activities, I hauled my sleepy brain and tired body out of the bed before I changed my mind, to accompany Dad, Uncle and a bunch of cousins into hiking all the way up to a mountain to pray for the gods of heaven. I am not mocking my families’ belief or whatever, I’m mocking the fact that I have to wake up so early on a vacation. Vacation! I don’t mind doing it on any other day, everyone knows I love hiking and climbing mountains. Blood was calling and so blood has answered with a lot of complaining on the side.

It was a beautiful day, mind you, to climb. The sun was shining prettily down on us, a bit chilly so I was holding real tight on my layer of clothing. We started walking at around 8 in the morning and was expected to be at the summit after less than two hours (it wasn’t that high a mountain in fairness) but since there’s a bunch of us making our way up there, you can’t really blame if it halts us. And that is exactly what happened. I was huffing and puffing and catching my breath every so often, only had the summit idea to keep me walking forward.

Although I obviously don’t put photos in here aside from the fact that I am too lazy to do that, resizing and all that stuff. They’ll probably stay there in the comp until I get the enthusiasm or the strength needed to put them online, for how long, god knows when.

Anyway, I’m still learning and getting the hang of using a point and shoot camera. Mainly all I do is point and click. Don’t know much about angles, getting the best shot, using natural light to your advantage. Gotta read more on the manual but I’m too lazy to do that. I’ve been coming and going almost every week now I don’t exactly remember what I did and who I was with. Well, at least not all the time. I’ve been meaning to go on a hike but it seems that my plan doesn’t push through for reason unknown. Gosh, I miss walking on the trails and the smell of the trees and leaves crunching beneath my feet. Must go now.

So my friends wanted to go outside (and I honestly do too cos I think I really need it and deserve it), so we were browsing the net to find a really cool beach for some really cheap vacations. We were arguing between driving to the south or the west and not having much luck because everyone has their own opinion and this or that but in the end, beach on the south won over west because it is nearer than going all the way to say California sunshine or Oregon.

So the next problem is: where in south exactly? When we say south, it is understood to be somewhere in Florida. Although it can be pretty crowded in there, Allen assured us that there are some areas where it isn’t that crowded. Especially in this season, he’s sure there won’t be too much people. So where did we end up after all the arguing and bickering? Destin. Funny.

I do believe that we really got lucky! We were already in Destin when we found out that the place are frequently being visited by thunderstorms and rain showers. That will be such a bummer for a vacation good thing we didn’t encounter any during our stay in there. Hooray for us! We all hit the water and had so much fun playing with the waves we didn’t even notice that we haven’t eaten anything for lunch yet and it was almost two in the afternoon! So we walked over some of the shops to have a bite and after we visited the rest of the stuffs they have in each shop.

There were so much activities to do in Destin, aside from the water activities. We went fishing! It was my first time to actually do it. We rented the pole and I keep on asking the boys what to do and how to it right I hope I didn’t annoy them with all my funny questions. It was so much fun especially when you finally had your catch!! Did you know that there are some areas that are closed for some reason: alligator! Yes, a real life alligators.
